Not Just an Accessory: Sunglasses are Just as Important as Sunscreen

Health Benefits of Sunglasses

We all know the feeling of heading out on a sunny day, equipped with sunscreen to protect our skin from harmful rays. However, in the midst of the excitement, we sometimes forget about an equally important aspect of sun protection: our eyes.

Sunglasses not only elevate our style, but they also play an important role in shielding our eyes from potential damage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. According to Piedmont Health, UV light can harmfully affect your eyelids, cornea, lens, and retina. This is especially important for seniors.

The American Family Physician states one in three individuals have some form of vision-reducing eye disease by the age of 65. Wearing sunglasses can help prevent age-related vision issues. The frames also assist in skin care and protect the skin around the eyes from aging. Here are some of the ways to use sunglasses effectively.

When to wear sunglasses

Sunglasses shouldn’t only be used during the summer, but year-round. Dr. Elliot Levine, an ophthalmologist at Piedmont Health, explains you’re always exposed to UV light. He says that is especially true while you’re near water because the light reflects. That also goes for snow. So, it’s recommended to pull out those sunglasses during winter walks.

What to look for in sunglasses

According to Piedmont Health, here are several details you should consider while selecting a new pair of sunglasses:

1.  Make sure its 100 percent UV protection.

2. Consider a wraparound style: it can reduce the amount of UV exposure to your eyes.

3. Consider polarized sunglasses: this can reduce glare from reflections.

4. You don’t always have to pick the priciest pair: Dr. Levine says the cost does not matter as long as it’s 100 percent UV protection.
