COURAGE - its origin comes from the French word for "heart," so, just as the heart gives our body life and vitality, courage is actually the virtue that brings together all of our other values.
CourAGE = Heart : Feel the fear and move forward anyway.
Isn't it interesting that AGE makes up half of the word CourAGE! With age comes wisdom and courage too. It takes courage to create an optimal life and overcome fear, yet we don't want to have too much or too little of it.
Courage helps us discover the center of our strength... for me, and many others, that epicenter is God. He uses education, tools, people, inspiration, nature, and stories to help us discover our best self.
“The acorn becomes an oak by means of automatic growth; no commitment is necessary. The kitten similarly becomes a cat on the basis of instinct. Nature and being are identical in creatures like them. But a man or woman becomes fully human only by his or her choices and his or her commitment to them. People attain worth and dignity by the multitude of decisions they make from day by day. These decisions require courage.“ ~ Rollo May in his book Courage to Create
Rollo May, a twentieth-century psychologist, also said, “Finding the center of strength within ourselves is in the long run the best contribution we can make to our fellow men.”
American 'New Thought' writer, Wallace Wattles, said: “Your first duty to God, to yourself, and to the world is to make yourself as great a personality, in every way, as you possibly can.” And: “The very best thing you can do for the whole world is to make the most of yourself.”
Of course, we can't talk about COURAGE without thinking about the Wizard of Oz and the Cowardly Lion! ..."What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk?"
May concisely said, "Every organism has one and only one central need in life, to fulfill its own potentialities."
Fulfilling our potential certainly takes courage.
